Listener Questions

  • Question from Paula – Her computer got shut down (due to a power outage) while installing Windows 7 updates.  After the first reboot, it was hung of the installing 5 of 19 updates.  She restarted it a few times and had to hit either F2 or F12 to start up.  Now it won’t boot normally and comes up with a black screen with a white blinking cursor.  Normally, Windows will pick back up where it left off when powered off during a windows update.  However, the multiple reboots have probably put your machine in an unknown state to Windows and that’s probably why it will no longer boot.  More than likely, windows will need to be reinstalled.  Before doing that, we would recommend pulling your data off the computer.  There are several options if your machine won’t boot to get it to a place where you can get the data
    • Yumi – Software that helps create a multi-boot USB stick
    • Emergency Boot CD – another option to boot your computer from CD/USB drive to see your data
    • Linux Mint – An alternate OS that can be loaded onto a USB drive and can boot up your PC
    • For a Mac that won’t boot, you cam use Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper! to make backups of data, including a bit-for-bit copy of your Mac hard drive to boot from
